Arobella | Wound debridement

Arobella’s wound debridement system once required clinic visits and external saline setups, limiting mobility and use in the field. We redesigned it into a compact, self-contained device with an integrated pump and handle—eliminating bulky accessories and enhancing portability. The result: more accessible, effective wound care across homes, clinics, and nursing facilities.

Expanding Patient Access with a Revolutionary Use Case

Arobella’s shift to a portable, on-site wound debridement system marks a significant evolution in patient care. Previously designed for clinical settings, the system required patients to travel to hospitals or specialized facilities, often creating barriers for those with limited mobility or access. This redesign allows healthcare providers to deliver the same high-quality care directly to patients in homes, clinics, and nursing homes, reducing travel burdens and improving access to timely treatment.

A Fundamental Redesign

Transitioning to portability required a major overhaul of the system. The original stationary generator relied on external equipment, like saline stands, unsuitable for non-clinical settings. By integrating a peristaltic pump directly into the generator and adding a built-in handle, we eliminated the need for bulky setups while enhancing ease of transport.

Better Outcomes, Greater Accessibility

This portable solution improves patient outcomes by enabling more consistent, timely care and reducing infection risks. It is particularly impactful for elderly and homebound patients, who can now receive treatment in comfort, significantly enhancing recovery and quality of life. This redesign redefines wound care delivery, offering a new standard in patient-centered innovation.

The final design was realized as a functional prototype, incorporating all critical features into a cohesive system. This prototype not only demonstrated the device’s technical feasibility but also showcased its practicality in real-world applications. The built-in handle ensured effortless transport, while the integrated peristaltic pump eliminated the need for external setups. The sleek, modern aesthetic with curving patterns reinforced Arobella’s brand identity, setting a new standard for portable wound care devices.

During the down-selection phase, we evaluated the various concepts against criteria such as portability, ease of use, and integration of functional components. Feedback from healthcare providers and internal teams was instrumental in narrowing the options. The chosen direction effectively embodied the usability changes we aimed to achieve, combining a compact form factor with intuitive operation to support Arobella’s new portable use case.
